Bible Verses About Grief and Loss (KJV)
The Bible never tells a grieving person to hurry. It says God is near to the brokenhearted, that He keeps count of every tear, and that for those in Christ, death is a parting and not an ending. The verses below are quoted in full from the King James Bible, each with a short note.
If you are grieving today, you do not need to read them all. One is enough for one day.
Psalm 34:18
"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."
Nigh means near. He does not wait at a distance for you to recover.
Matthew 5:4
"Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted."
Mourning is not weakness. Christ called it blessed.
Psalm 147:3
"He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds."
Binding up is slow, careful work. Healing takes time and He takes it.
Revelation 21:4
"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."
The promise is not that grief is small, but that it is temporary.
John 11:35
"Jesus wept."
He knew He was about to raise Lazarus and He still wept. Grief is not unbelief.
1 Thessalonians 4:13
"But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope."
Christians still sorrow. The difference is hope, not the absence of tears.
Psalm 23:4
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."
A shadow can frighten but it cannot harm.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4
"Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God."
Comfort received becomes comfort given. Your grief will one day help someone.
Psalm 56:8
"Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?"
Not one tear is wasted or unnoticed.
Isaiah 53:3
"He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not."
Christ is acquainted with grief. He is not a stranger to what you feel.
John 14:1-2
"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you."
Spoken to men about to lose Him. A place is being prepared.
Psalm 30:5
"For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning."
The night can be long. Morning is still promised.
Romans 8:18
"For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us."
Not a denial of the suffering, but a measure of what outweighs it.
1 Corinthians 15:55
"O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?"
The question is asked in triumph, because the resurrection already answered it.
Psalm 116:15
"Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints."
What feels like loss to us is precious to Him.

Grief asks a question that comfort alone cannot answer: what happens after death. The Bible answers it in Christ, who died and rose so that death would not be the end for those who trust Him. If you have never trusted Jesus Christ, you can do it right where you are. You do not need a church building, a special prayer, or a better week. Tell Him plainly that you are a sinner, that you believe He died for your sins and rose again, and that you are trusting Him alone to save you. He has promised that whoever comes to Him He will in no wise cast out.
