What Is the Gospel?
The gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day, and that everyone who trusts in Him is forgiven and given eternal life. It is not advice about how to live better. It is a report of something God has already done, and the only right response to it is to believe it.
The gospel starts with bad news
Good news only makes sense to someone who knows they are in trouble. The Bible says every one of us is in trouble. Not just the criminals and the cruel, but the polite, the religious, and the kind.
That is a hard sentence to read. It is also an honest one. Every person who has ever lived has fallen short of what a holy God requires. No amount of good behaviour later erases what is already on the record.
Sin has a price, and God paid it Himself
God did not lower His standard to let us in. He met His own standard and paid the price Himself. Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, took the punishment that belonged to us.
This is the heart of the gospel. It is not that God overlooked sin. It is that He judged it fully, at the cross, in the person of His own Son.
The resurrection is the receipt
A dead saviour saves nobody. The gospel does not end at the cross; it ends at an empty tomb. Christ rose the third day, and hundreds of people saw Him alive.
The resurrection is God's public receipt that the debt was accepted as paid in full. That is why the gospel can be announced as finished work rather than an open account.
It is received by faith, not earned by works
Every other religious system in the world says do. The gospel says done. You do not add your good record to Christ's work; you trust His work instead of your record.
That offends our pride, and it should. Salvation that could be earned would be a wage, not a gift. God made it a gift so that no one could boast.
What the gospel is not
The gospel is not being a good person. It is not going to church. It is not being born into a Christian family, being baptised as an infant, or keeping a list of rules.
All of those may be good things or neutral things, but none of them is the gospel. The gospel is a Person and what He did.

If you have never trusted Jesus Christ, you can do it right where you are. You do not need a church building, a special prayer, or a better week. Tell Him plainly that you are a sinner, that you believe He died for your sins and rose again, and that you are trusting Him alone to save you. He has promised that whoever comes to Him He will in no wise cast out.
